If you haven't used IRC before, it's a protocol for instant messaging and file sharing based around chat rooms. Access is achieved through an IRC client. Some popular IRC clients are

• Web-based applet (just runs in your browser)
• xchat
• Chatzilla (add-on to Firefox web browser)
• konverstation (KDE-based client)
• Pidgin
• and so on
