1
Progress of MICE, the International Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment
2

3
Ionization Cooling is the only practical solution to preparing high
4
brilliance muon beams for a neutrino factory or muon collider. The
5
muon ionization cooling experiment (MICE) is under development at the
6
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) by an international collaboration.
7

8
The muon beam line has been commissioned and, for the first time,
9
measurements of beam emittance with particle physics detectors have
10
been performed.
11

12
The remaining apparatus is currently under construction. First results
13
with a liquid-hydrogen absorber will be produced in 2013; a couple
14
of years later a full cell of a representative ionization cooling
15
channel, including RF re-acceleration, will be in operation. The design
16
offers opportunities to observe cooling with various absorbers and
17
several optics configurations. Results will be compared with detailed
18
simulations of cooling channel performance to ensure full understanding
19
of the cooling process.
