Title:
2
Progress in the construction of the MICE cooling channel
3
Abstract:
4
The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE), sited
5
at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK, aims to build and test
6
one cell of a realistic ionization cooling channel lattice. This
7
comprises three Absorber Focus Coils (AFC) modules and two RF Coupling
8
Coil (RFCC) modules; both are technically challenging. The Focus Coils
9
(FC) are dual-coil superconducting solenoids, in close proximity,
10
wound on a common mandrel. At the center of each FC there is a 20
11
letters liquid-hydrogen absorber, operating at about 14 K, to serve as
12
the energy loss medium for the ionization cooling process. The
13
longitudinal beam momentum is restored in the RFCC modules, each of
14
which houses four 201.25-MHz RF cavities whose irises are closed with
15
42-cm diameter thin Beryllium windows. To contain the muon beam, each
16
RFCC module also has a 1.4-m diameter superconducting coupling
17
solenoid surrounding the cavities. Both types of magnet are cooled
18
with multiple 2-stage cryogenic-coolers, each delivering 1.5 W of
19
cooling at 4 K. Designs for all components are complete and
20
fabrication is under way. Descriptions of the various components,
21
design requirements, and construction status is presented.
