20160720 settings

The spectrometer solenoids have been shown to be reasonably stable running at 140 A, with revised QPS trip levels. There is an aim to bring up the magnet line in some solenoid configuration, probably at 140 A. It is not clear how much time we will get running with the full line, how much we will be limited to only e.g. one module or e.g. only SSU and SSD. It is clear that we will not run match coils. So I have prepared a set of magnet/beam line settings for the eventuality that we have SSU and SSD both powered.

Consideration:

  • Match coils will not be available
  • End coils E1/E2 are expected to run at CC current
  • ECE is not allowed > 140 A
  • FC is not allowed > 90 A
  • It is likely that the magnets are not aligned to each other or detectors to better than ~ few mm
  • It is possible that there are current-dependent misalignment of the trackers due to forces on the SS

In this context, I have prepared some generic settings at fixed current where we do a momentum scan. This enables us to

  • Validate tracker reconstruction
  • Validate the detector alignment (TOF to tracker)
  • Validate the detector alignment (tracker to tracker, through the fields)

Then I have prepared some magnet scan settings. This enables us to

  • Validate the magnet alignment/model
  • Validate the detector alignment (TOF to tracker)

It will be challenging to untangle magnet movement with current from detector alignment. One could imagine doing the momentum scan at two different magnet current settings. For now, I think we should try these run settings and seek to figure out what is going on...

Task 2: Fixed magnet settings SSU and SSD

If SSU and SSD are powered and the magnet people agree; repeat the fixed magnet settings as in Task 1. This takes priority over task 3 below.

Task 3: Magnet Scans SSU and SSD

If SSU and SSD are powered and the magnet people agree. The idea is to change the magnet settings by +/- 5 % and +/- 10 % and watch how the beam responds.

Task 4: Fixed magnet settings SSU, FC and SSD

If SSU, FC and SSD are powered and the magnet people agree; repeat the fixed magnet settings as in Task 1. Use ECE at 130 A and FC at 60.7 A; FC is set for reason of optical symmetry

Task 5: Diffuser settings

Aim is to validate the diffuser is working okay. For this setting, we are concerned to get a reasonable statistic at TKU; and watch to see the emittance change/energy loss when different absorber petals are installed. We only care about SSU operation for this setting (to try to measure change in pz).

We do a diffuser empty at the beginning and end to check for beamline stability. If this setting runs over several days, it is probably worth repeating the diffuser empty setting as a reference.
