Title: Progress towards completion of the MICE demonstration of
4
   ionisation cooling of muons

The Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment (MICE) based at the Rutherford
8
Appleton Laboratory aims to demonstrate 10%
9
ionisation cooling of a beam of muons by its interaction with low Z
10
absorber materials followed by restoration of
11
longitudinal momentum in RF linacs.
12
Extensions to the apparatus required to achieve STEP IV, including the
13
first absorber cell, of either liquid hydrogen or
14
lithium hydride, sandwiched between two particle tracking spectrometers
15
shall be described. Two very large
16
superconducting spectrometer solenoids (the first of which has just
17
completed acceptance trials) and one focus coil
18
solenoid (currently under test), manufactured in the US and UK
19
respectively, will provide a magnetic field of ~ 4T in the
20
volume of the two trackers and the absorber cell. The development,
21
testing and integration of these challenging
22
components will be reported.

Progress towards STEPs V & VI including the 8 RF cavities to provide the
24
required 8MV/m gradient in a strong magnetic
25
field will be presented, including the RF drive system to deliver 2MW,
26
1ms pulses of 201MHz frequency at a PRF of 1Hz,
27
the distribution network to deliver 1MW to each cavity with correct RF
28
phasing, diagnostics to determine the gradient and
29
transit phase of the muons and the development of the very large
30
diameter magnets required for the linacs.
